Job description for a bodyguardBefore you begin your bodyguard or close protection training, it’s smart to first understand the job description, the required tasks and requirements necessary to become a bodyguard.

The job description for a bodyguard varies according to the type of  contract that you are applying for, but generally it lines up with the following:

Bodyguards, which are now commonly known as personal protection, close protection officers (CPOs) or Executive Protection (EP), protect individuals or groups from risk of violence, kidnapping or any situation which could be classed as harmful to the client. They work with a wide range of people including politicians, heads of industry, royalty and TV, film and music celebrities.

A contract can typically include:

  • Protecting clients from threats e.g. terrorist, political opponents, stalkers or enthusiastic fans.
  • Risk Assessments e.g location and travel planning
  • Being constantly alert to react to threatening situations
  • Accompanying clients on visits
  • Expert driving
  • Specialization in residential security, private investigation techniques, surveillance.
  • Specialization in defensive and evasive driving techniques.

What You Must Know Before You Begin Bodyguard Training

Some bodyguards and close protection officers must know how to operate screening devices to screen individuals and prevent passage of prohibited articles into restricted areas. In most cases, bodyguards are expected to be trained in advanced driving techniques to escort individuals to specified locations and to provide personal protection.

A bodyguard must inspect and adjust security systems, equipment, and machinery to ensure operational use and to detect evidence of tampering.

A bodyguard must be capable of writing reports about the daily activities and irregularities such as equipment, surveillance, presence of unauthorized persons or unusual occurrences. He or she must be well versed in the English Language, able to read and write with proper grammar and spelling. It is also a benefit to know at least one other language fluently. Some of the most highly paid bodyguard jobs go to Arabic speaking bodyguards.

In addition, many bodyguards are required to have Computer skills – amongst many other devices which can be used for your work.

A bodyguard is expected to have expert knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to ensure the safety of their client or clients.

Finally, a bodyguard must have full knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process including international law and especially rules of engagement. These things are imperative for a bodyguard to understand, because these rules and regulations are the basis for all proper actions taken as the bodyguard.
